Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Operations (Yard Hostler) Supervisor leads a team of yard hostlers at a 24/7, 770,000-square-foot distribution center. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of trailers throughout the yard, supporting seamless inbound and outbound operations. Key areas of focus include yard organization, dock flow, equipment readiness, and close collaboration with warehouse and transportation teams.
The Supervisor plays a critical role in maintaining operational excellence by promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, and driving productivity in a fast-paced, around-the-clock environment. This position helps keep the distribution network running smoothly while supporting team performance, service levels, and continuous operational improvement.
All the responsibilities we'll trust you with:
Lead daily yard hostler activities to ensure safe, timely, and accurate movement of trailers in support of inbound, outbound, shipping, receiving, and dock operations.
Communicate and reinforce yard safety procedures, standard work, equipment expectations, preferred work methods, and best business practices to ensure yard hostlers are trained and operating to performance standards.
Plan and schedule yard hostler coverage across a 24/7 operation, including shift coverage, vacations, holidays, callouts, and other operational needs to maintain continuous yard support.
Monitor yard workflow, trailer staging, dock door utilization, and hostler productivity to maintain an efficient, safe, and balanced flow of equipment throughout the facility.
Coach, develop, and hold yard hostlers accountable through ongoing performance feedback, training reinforcement, recognition of strong performance, and timely corrective coaching when expectations are not met.
Reduce overtime by utilizing the daily planning tool spreadsheet.
Partner with transportation, warehouse leadership, shipping, receiving, and inventory teams to prioritize trailer movement, resolve yard constraints, and support uninterrupted facility flow.
Work with inventory control and operations systems to ensure that all product integrity is maintained and is properly stored and rotated.
Ensure that all required employee reviews are submitted in a timely, consistent, and accurate manner.
Work with inventory control to minimize warehouse shrink (product loss).
Responsible for the organization, appearance, maintenance coordination, and security of the yard, hostler equipment, trailers, and related operating areas.
Observe and enforce all yard and warehouse safety rules, including safe vehicle operation, pedestrian awareness, dock safety, trailer parking, chocking, coupling, and equipment inspection expectations.
Support the safety effort by working with the safety department to resolve safety issues.
Ensure warehouse computers and rf (radio frequency) equipment are used in a safe and professional manner.
Understand and comply with all applicable company policies (i.e. Attendance, code of conduct, employee handbook, etc.)
Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws, regulations, company policies, and safety standards governing yard operations, warehouse operations, powered industrial equipment, and occupational safety requirements.
